While running burns calories, builds endurance and lowers your blood pressure, it may cause problems with your teeth. Physically active people especially runners have a higher risk of dental erosion, according to a small study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports. When researchers compared athletes to those that did not work out, they found the harder they worked out. The less saliva they had and the higher the P-H level was in their saliva. You may have heard this condition called runners mouth when your work out hard you sweat, breath out of your mouth which can dehydrate you and dry up the saliva. Saliva is crucial in oral health it keeps your mouth clean and prevents bacterial build up. Experts advise if you work out a lot make sure you drink plenty of water to produce saliva and chew a piece of sugar free gum or candy to get those saliva glands working properly.
