Scientists have created a new device that could replace the need for pacemakers and it is custom made to fit the heart like a glove. That’s right scientists have created an electronic membrane glove with sensors and electrodes that expand and contract with the heart. The device could one day deliver a series of electric pulses to stop a heart attack in its tracks. The University of Illinois and Washington University in St. Louis used computer model imaging and a 3-D printer to create the membrane glove prototype and fit it to a rabbits heart. Other devices known as cardiac socks have been around since the 1980s, but the new device uses stretchable electronics to decrease sensor malfunctions. The device is being used as a research tool for now to monitor how the heart reacts under different conditions, but it could become a common tool to monitor at-risk heart disease patients in the future. You can find more information on this latest device in the journal Nature Communications.
