A non-profit organization is asking the Boy Scouts of America to reconsider their body mass index or BMI restrictions for adults and children applying for certain summer activities.
Each year, thirty thousand kids and seven thousand adults travel to West Virginia to hike and rock climb for the National Summer Jamboree in July held by the Boy Scouts of America.
The organization requires that no child or adult with a BMI of 40 and above be allowed to participate in the Jamboree.
CNN reports this rule was used for last year’s applicants as well. The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance finds the restriction discriminates against larger boys and men and promotes negative attitudes of larger people. CNN reports the Boy Scouts goal is to promote healthy and active lifestyles.
