This year marks the 16th anniversary of operation lone star, an annual mission that takes place along the Texas-Mexico border its purpose, is to conduct a medical readiness exercise while providing services to residents across the Rio Grande Valley.
For many members of the Texas Army National Guard, this will be the first time taking part in this effort; staff sergeant Iturbe has high expectations.
Starting Monday, August 4th through Friday, August 7th free medical, dental and optical services will be provided at Manzano Middle School in Cameron County, PSJA High School in San Juan, Palmview High School in Palmview and Ringgold Middle School in Rio Grande City.
The entire program is under a first come first serve basis.
This year operation lone star will provide dental and optical services in two sites instead of one.
The operation is made possible with the help of hundreds of local service groups, medical schools and volunteers, yet many Valley residents may feel intimidated to see medical professionals in military uniform but there's no need to be afraid.
Reports show that a great number of Texans do not have health insurance, Medicaid, or access to health care services; this might be their only chance for a screening.
Keep in mind that hundreds of thousands of dollars in basic medical services are provided to valley residents during operation lone star every year, at no cost.
