Sugar lurks where you least expect it and sometimes we need to think twice before picking up certain beverages.
Some of the leading causes of tooth decay are due to the beverages we drink. Sodas and juices are the main culprits.
"Number one, there's a lot of sugar in these drinks, sometimes 10 to 15 teaspoons in a little can."
The amount of soda you drink can also be a risk factor for cavities,” says Dr. Saam Zarrabi, Rio Dental dentist.
Number two frequency the amount of times a day you're drinking these sodas. If it's once a day, not bad, but three, four, five seven times a day then we happen to have issues and the acids in the drinks will eventually lead to decay.
Dr. Zarrabi suggests sticking to drinks and foods that contain sugar alcohols that are natural and organic and stay away from artificial additives.
"If you're looking at the back of the label look for something that ends in -ose. If you see that like sucrose or fructose, any one of those, then it probably has some sugar in it and it's probably not good for you," adds Zarrabi.
Avoid drinking sweetened drinks at night to keep the acid off your teeth while you sleep and instead stick to water.
