Electronic devices are everywhere, but there is a good reason to keep them out of the bedroom. New research shows that reading on that e-reader before bed or staying up to watch your favorite Netflix series show can lead to substandard sleep cycles. The National Sleep Foundation polls show about 95 percent of Americans use an electronic device within an hour of going to sleep and that 89 percent of adults and 75 percent of children have at least one such device in their bedrooms. The light and noise from these devices can disrupt sleep cycles by tricking your body into thinking it is daytime, stopping it from producing a hormone that helps you sleep. A 2013 study published in the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Journal found that late night use of computers and mobile phones is related to insomnia. So what's the solution? Try giving yourself an electronic curfew. One hour before bed, remove or turn off all electronic devices in the bedroom. If you have a television, set up a timer that will automatically turn off the screen at a chosen time.
