Vibram, the company behind the popular barefoot toe running shoes, just settled at $3.75 million dollar class action lawsuit due to falsely advertising the shoe's health benefits. More than 70 million Americans purchased the barefoot running shoes to enhance their workout regimens. The lawsuit filed by Valerie Bezdek in March 2012 said the company made false claims and provided deceptive marketing about the benefits of wearing FiveFinger shoes without basing its claims on any scientific research. The FiveFinger shoes claimed to strengthen muscles in the lower legs and feet, improve range of motion in ankles, feet and toes, improve balance and agility and allow better natural movement. The American Podiatric Medicine Association says in a statement that while barefoot running has been touted to improve balance and strength, it does pose risks such as lack of protection and increased stress on your feet, which could lead to injury. Those who purchased a pair of FiveFinger shoes after March 2009 can submit for a partial refund at fivefingersettlement.com.
