The Edinburg Parks and Recreations have plenty of ways for you and your family to beat the heat this summer and one of those is aquatic aerobics.
Lifeguard instructors J.D. Castilla and Luis Ramos incorporate high intensity internal training with body resistant exercises such as lunges and squats to make their students work up a sweat in the pool.
And aquatics manager Alyssa Gutierrez says the health benefits are endless.
“There’s a lot of resistance which helps to build the muscles. It’s very easy on the joints especially for people with bad knees and muscle issues,” says Alyssa Gutierrez, Aquatics Manager, Edinburg Municipal Waterpark.
Water aerobics is also beneficial for those recuperating after surgery.
“It’s a great cardio exercise but for people that have problems like surgery like shoulders, it’s the best therapy,” says Luis Ramos, aquatics aerobics instructor and lifeguard.
Despite the stigma of being an elderly exercise, this energized water workout is fit for all ages and genders.
“People underestimate it, saying oh it’s for old ladies, but I’ve had young ones tell me it’s a great workout,” explains Gutierrez.
The Edinburg Municipal Waterpark holds two evening water aerobics classes Monday through Friday. The cost for a two week session is $15. For more information on water aerobics call 292-2124.
