The U.S. Food and Drug Administration debuts the new proposed nutrition label format in a press release today. FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg says the change is vital to the future of America’s health. The new format includes bigger and bolder fonts emphasizing servings per container and calorie counts. Vitamin D and Potassium will be added to the nutrient list because currently Americans aren’t getting enough of them. Vitamin C and A will no longer have to be listed. Added sugar content will be listed in the new format and serving size requirements will also be updated to reflect what people actually eat. The public has 90 days to comment on the new revisions before final FDA review. If you would like to comment, please visit www.fda.gov.
