Recent studies have exposed that Americans are eating too much sugar---about three to four times over the daily recommended amount-which is contributing to an obesity epidemic. The first tip is to ditch the soda. Diet or not, sodas can contain up to 40 grams of sugar in a 12 ounce can. Instead drink seltzer water with a splash of citrus. The next tip is to sweeten your yogurt naturally. Fruit already included in yogurts adds about 30 grams of sugar. Instead, buy plain yogurt and sweeten it with cinnamon and fresh fruit like blueberries. Fruit juice contains 10 percent of the added sugars in our diets. The solution: Dilute your favorite juice with water to cut back on calories. Say goodbye to added sugar cereals and substitute it with a bowl of steel cut oats or oatmeal. You can add fresh fruit, cinnamon or even vanilla protein powder for natural sweetness. Craving dessert, then pick fruit. Grilling fruits like peaches, watermelon and grapefruit will fulfill that sweet tooth with a good dose of fiber.
