A Canadian non-profit organization introduces its first crack pipe vending machines in Vancouver in efforts to curb the spread of diseases. Two vending machines were installed by Portland Hotel Societys Drug Users Resource Center. Users can buy as many new Pyrex pipes for twenty-five cents each. The low price and availability makes it easy for users to purchase clean pipes and not spread infectious diseases like mouth sores, HIV and AIDS, or the flu. Previous harm reduction methods such as this have been opposed by the Canadian federal government, but the vending machines are allowed under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. In other Health News, Uncle Bens rice is recalling some of it flavored rice products after people from three Houston schools developed allergy like rashes and flushing of the face. The affected products are Uncle Bens Infused Rice blends which are sold in 5 and 25 pound bags through wholesale distributors and produced by Mars Foodservices. The company is working close with the FDA to pull all its infused rice inventory. Uncle Bens products sold in supermarkets, like ready to heat, box or cup portions are not affected by the recent recall. The company states they are manufactured separately.
